Crockpot Apple Butter

Crockpot Apple Butter

Ingredients:

12-15 apples, medium to large size.
1/2 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 Tsp allspice
1/2 Tsp cloves (optional)

Directions:
  • Peel, core and slice apples into quarters.
  • Place in crockpot and add sugar and spices. Mix to stir.
  • Cook on low 8-10 hours.
  • Use a potato masher and mash up the mixture.
  • Cook for another 2 hours or so.
  • Mixture should be brown and thickened.
  • Turn off crockpot and cool for 1-2 hours.
  • Run mixture through the blender.
  • Pour into jars or freezer containers.

NOTES: If after 12 hours, your apple butter is soupy, it's not apple butter. If this happens, remove the lid from the crockpot to allow liquid to escape and cook another 1-2 hours until mixture thickens. How quickly your apple butter becomes dense has a lot to do with the moisture content of your apples. Some types of apples have less moisture than others.

You can store this in jars or freezer containers for about 3 weeks in your refrigerator. You can freeze it for about 6 months. You can also put in canning jars and do a water bath canning and it will last about a year.
I used a 7 qt crockpot and 16 apples. If your crockpot is smaller you want to use about 12 apples. I got about 6 cups of apple butter.
